Teaching is more than just providing students with information to pass the test. Teaching is giving students the skills necessary for them to build on their prior knowledge and develop important critical thinking skills. Prior to student teaching, my practice with planning for instruction consisted of creating individual lesson plans for coursework and practicum experiences. I was able to gain experience in creating long-term unit plans during my coursework, however I was never able to implement these units during actual instruction time. My internship helped me acquire new skills to be able to plan effectively and connect segments of my plans from one day to the next. I learned throughout my internship, that the most important thing for effective instruction is planning and preparation. For my unit of study during my internship, I began creating my unit by examining the Virginia Standards of Learning, the county's curriculum guide, and resources such as the county-wide end of unit exam. After I reviewed these materials I blocked out my instruction in my daily planner. From there, I started to collect resources, such as video links and activities that would engage my students and fulfill the objectives of the unit. I complied my plans into one unit of study. Below are examples of lessons I was able to implement during my student internship, including my unit of study in Science.
