Philosophy of Management
Education should serve the purpose of preparing younger generations for life, work, and citizenship. Furthermore, children should be given the right to develop in these ways in an environment that is caring, secure, and accommodating to their different needs.

Behavior Expectations
Students deserve fairness and respect, and in turn should be respectable of their teacher and classmates. This type of environment promotes cooperative learning among teachers and peers, and enriches a student’s personal growth. Students have a number of responsibilities when it comes to their education. I will expect my students to follow the rules and processes of our classroom. I hope to do so by including my students in the process of creating rules and consequences for our classroom. As a class, we can then reference them throughout the school year to deal with misbehavior, or problems that arise. My students also have the responsibility of respecting each other beliefs and differences and should refrain from bullying or hurting other students. I hope to address this issue by incorporating my student’s diverse backgrounds into my instruction. In my opinion, knowing about other cultures enriches a student’s personal knowledge and character. I believe it is very important for me to convey these expectations from the very first day of class. I have learned from my own professional development, that consistency is key when it comes to the rules, expectations, and consequences of the classroom. |
Pre-School Checklist
There are a number of things you can do to prepare you classroom, including how you arrange your room, gathering supplies, reviewing policies and procedures, making a seating chart, and preparing a checklist of supplies for students to have at the start of class. These simple tasks can help you have a successful first day, but it is also important to remember that not everything always goes as planned. Things will go wrong. As educators, we can’t be discouraged the first time a plan goes awry or a student ignores our attempts to manage disruptive behavior. We have to find a variety of strategies and remember that the same strategy may not work for every situation or every child. A list is provided below to show what types of tasks need to be completed before the start of the school year.

Classroom Motto
My classroom motto or slogan may vary depending on the school. Most schools instill a school-wide motto that classroom teachers have the job of reinforcing daily. With that in mind, I still value the idea of asking students for their input. As the teacher, I can guide what the slogan or motto will look like, but by giving my students options, I am involving them in such a manner that gives them a sense of ownership. I found a classroom motto that I really enjoy that I hope I can build from once I have a classroom of my own. The motto is as follows: "In our class, we are a team. We respect each other. We take risks. We learn from our mistakes. We try our best. We create. We dream big! We celebrate each other’s success." I think it is very important to convey to students that we are a team and it takes each and every one of them to help make the team successful everyday. |
Classroom Arrangement
I believe that my methods of instruction relate directly to my classroom organization. I will have my classroom divided up into sections that students can move about easily and interact with their peers. I believe it is important to make learning fun for my students, especially at their age, and to accomplish this I will decorate my classroom accordingly. I will use posters, bright colors, interactive materials, and themes to carry out my instruction daily. I believe I am creative when it comes to developing materials that will engage my students and make learning engaging, while at the same time providing critical information for my student’s intellectual development. I will have multiple centers that students can move about during guided reading sessions. These centers will build upon prior knowledge and concepts we are working on in class. The layout shown above is how I would hope to organize my own classroom. |
Class Rules
I will have an outline of necessary rules to begin the school year, but I strongly believe that students should be included in the process from the very first day of school. Going along with the theme of our classroom motto of a team, I want the classroom rules to start with WE. Some examples are provided below:
Consequences will vary based on severity of the misbehavior. I will use a clip up/ clip down behavior chart for minor misbehaviors like continuous talking, goofing around, not staying on task, yelling, etc. As a class, we would have discussed consequences for rule infractions at the beginning of the school year. Major misconduct or rule infractions such as hitting another classmate or using inappropriate behavior will result in write-ups and notes home. Some cases may need to result in the student being sent to the principal’s office. I want my student to learn self-reflection when it comes to misbehavior. I will have my students reflect one on one with me, or write in their journals about their behavior. I will provide them with model sentences and questions that promote self-reflection. |

Management Procedures and Routines
Students will have a set daily routine. It is very important to establish consistency early on in the school year. Students will start the day by coming in the classroom, putting their backpacks and coats away and getting out their daily folders. Students will write down what we tasks we have for the following day such as projects, or tests. Students will make their lunch choices by placing their name under the lunch option on the board. We will have the daily school announcements and I will display the schedule for the day on the Smart board. Objectives for the different content areas will also be displayed for the class to reference throughout the school year. Displaying objectives and summarizing them during the introductions to lessons can give students further clarity when it comes to expectations. Class will end with students getting ready to go home. Students will color their behavior charts in their daily folders for parents to sign off on everyday. Students will also have monthly reading calendars to complete in their folders. There will be designated areas (i.e. the “I’m finished box”) for students to turn in materials during the day. There will be students assigned to distribute materials as part of their weekly jobs/responsibilities. I find it very beneficial to assign students roles or jobs within the classroom. It teaches them to take responsibility for their actions. I think changing these jobs weekly/bi-weekly is appropriate. I will organize my helpers alphabetically and by gender so that each student has an opportunity to experience each job. |
Communication
I believe the key to my success in the classroom, and the success of my students for that matter, is communication. As a teacher, I have to communicate clearly with my students and their parents about the expectations for my classroom and my instruction. If I have learned anything over my internship, it has been that communication with parents is a must. Keeping parents informed helps them gain an understanding of the expectations and goals their children will have to meet in my classroom. I hope to accomplish an open line of communication with parents by sending them weekly updates on our classroom progress. They will know the objectives and topics we are discussing each week and any work the students are expected to complete. I also have to communicate with my colleagues and superiors if I want my teaching experience to be successful. Partnering with my peers can help me create a healthy classroom environment for my students. Counselors can support new teachers by implementing mentor programs and serving as an aid when dealing with behavioral problems in the classroom. Without support and assistance, beginning teachers are more likely to experience high stress levels. It is vital for me as a new teacher to partner with my colleagues from the very beginning of the school year. |
Summary
My management plan is one that values teacher-student cooperation, places value on teacher instruction as well as student collaboration and personal development, and ultimately serves to give my students the education each of them deserves no matter what diversities they may face. The skills and tools I have learned about in my own education will help shape me into the teacher I want to be. I know that my path as a teacher may have obstacles, but I look at those obstacles as opportunities to learn something new. I will work towards bettering myself as an intellectual so I can be a better teacher for my students.
Every year, we have more and more access to vast amounts of information from around the world and it is important to know how it can affect our lives and our students' lives. We are preparing them for a world with many possibilities and it is our duty to give them the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed. How does one do this in the education field? By being a reflective teacher. Having the ability to organize a lesson, deliver that lesson, and reflect on what went wrong or what could have gone better is a valuable skill to have and one I know I will bring to the development of my management plan.
